Hey John. Yes, lots of questions. Some quick observations:
- yes, the VC market will consolidate. This is healthy.
- some big brand names will definitely be affected
- re: stages - there does seem to be a bifurcation. Definitely new early-stage, small round funds like True Ventures, First Round Capital, Founders' Fund, etc. It is less costly to build many startups these days. But also some VC's trying to be later stage where they perceive they get better value.

Thanks for stopping by.

Wow, basically from the article: If you invested in a bad company w/ high burn rate looking for fund rasing you are shit out of luck due to the valuation coming down as we all piss poor management of financial s. Thus coming the conclusion that already a bad situation could be made worse due to the economic situation. My other question is that this posts title was a little miss leading, i was expecting more of an insite into the actualy thawing of VC investment. Not the reasons as to why the VC's ice age started, maybe i am missing the point here but sounds like you have another piece you are going to add to this soon.

Judging by Gurley's analysis and some of the other material I have read, it looks like the VC market is in for quite a bit of consolidation. I am sure the Sequoias and KPCB's of the industry will stick around. So, will the consolidation occur at the "mini-majors" level? Also, given the pricing problem and lack of liquidity of VC as an asset allocation, how will the stage at which companies get funded be effected? Will smaller VC's and funds emerge who target smaller rounds in less proven/higher risk startups? - or - Will capital shift to proven/growth-stage companies?

Lot's of questions... probably best addressed in another post(s) :)

It was the shut-down of September 2008, not 2009. It was severe indeed, and I am still frostbitten. The consolation remains a tremendous learning experience. Thanks for adding more insight for even deeper understanding so I can keep it all in perspective. Look forward to parts 2 and 3.
