Just another data point: after your post, I asked around with former Broadview colleagues and got the sense that M&A business is picking up and there is definite optimism for 2010.

Jaime seemed a bit negative about SoCal saying its still hard to build management teams and there isn't an investor ecosystem here yet. Same story we have heard for the last 1o years. I think things are changing and there are 13 digital media / advertising companies that have raised in excess of $1B sadly without the help of any local SoCal firms. Here is the list. http://lunch.com/t/l9x

Can't add much from personal experience in the VC world, but I've been seeing a moderate uptick in M&A activity from private equity clients. It's obviously a different dynamic in many ways, but it seems like people in a variety of sectors are getting slightly more comfortable with the outlook for the economy.

On another note, I thought I'd spout off some thoughts on topics that might be interesting for later posts:
- How to think about stealth mode vs. iterative launches/MVP
- Friends and family funding - worth doing?
- Why was your fraternity presidency such good prep for startup life?
- Pros and cons for playing in the next hot trend (mobile, social, real-time these days) versus something out of left field
- How do you know when the startup has outgrown you (or a founder in your portfolio) as CEO?

My experience the last 6 months are VC runnin' around like scared little chick-a-dees. Good to see some optimism and a fresh approach on the M&A market.

Our prediction? An investment baby!

http://blog.vidli.com/invest-in-vidli/
